Product Overview & Core Advantages
The XLZ Series Screw Stone Washer (also known as Screw Gravel Washer or Auger Stone Washer) is a piece of equipment that combines hydraulic flushing with screw conveying to clean, deslime, classify and initially dewater coarse stone materials and gravel. With mature structure and stable operation, it is widely used in sand and gravel aggregate production lines, construction aggregate processing and ore washing processes across Africa, Southeast Asia, South Asia, South America, Middle East, and Central Asia, serving as key equipment to improve the cleanliness of coarse aggregate for construction and infrastructure projects.
Available in both single-screw and double-screw configurations, the XLZ series adapts to various production scales from small quarries to large mining operations. The transmission system is isolated from water and stone, resulting in low failure rate and extended service life even when processing abrasive materials like granite, basalt and river pebbles.

River Pebble & Cobble Processing
Pain Point: River pebbles are coated with silt and clay, requiring cleaning before use as decorative or construction stone Solution: Robust screw design handles rounded river stones up to 75mm with high washing efficiency Result: Clean decorative pebbles or high-grade construction aggregate from river deposits Recommended: XLZ-1118 double-screw for high-capacity river stone washing
Technical Deep Dive: Screw Stone Washer Working Principle
7.1 Working Principle - Coarse Aggregate Cleaning
The screw stone washer completes coarse material cleaning through the synergy of screw blade rotation conveying and water flow flushing:
Feeding Stage: Raw stones (gravel, pebbles, or crushed stone) enter the washing tank from the top and mix with water to form slurry. The tank inclination and water flow create initial stratification based on particle specific gravity.
Conveying & Scrubbing: The motor drives the screw shaft to rotate via reducer. Heavy-duty screw blades push stones forward along the tank while continuously lifting and turning them. This mechanical scrubbing action combined with high-pressure water flow removes clay coatings, soil, and surface impurities from coarse aggregate.
Desliming: Light impurities such as clay lumps, soil, and organic matter are suspended in water and discharged through the overflow port at the lower end of the tank. Clean water is continuously added to maintain washing efficiency for coarse stones.
Discharge: The cleaned stones are conveyed to the discharge end by the screw. The lifting action allows initial dewatering before discharge, resulting in clean, graded aggregate ready for construction use.
7.2 Key Components for Stone Washing
Heavy-Duty Screw Blades: Made of high-manganese steel (Mn13 or Mn18) with thickness 20-30mm to withstand abrasion from hard stones. Designed for processing gravel, pebbles, and crushed stone up to 75mm.
Reinforced Central Shaft: Heavy-duty carbon steel shaft with large-diameter bearings to handle the weight of coarse stones. Bearing housing positioned above water level to prevent contamination.
Abrasion-Resistant Tank: Thick steel construction with replaceable liner plates in high-wear zones. Designed for continuous operation with abrasive stone materials.
High-Torque Drive: Combination of motor and reducer with safety torque limiter to protect against overload from large stones or foreign objects.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q1: How does a screw stone washer differ from a wheel bucket washer for gravel cleaning?
Screw stone washers use spiral blades to convey and scrub coarse materials continuously, making them better for high clay content gravels and larger stones (up to 75mm). They provide more thorough cleaning of aggregate but use more water. Wheel bucket washers are better for finer gravels (0-10mm) with less clay. For quarry operations with mixed stones, cobbles and high clay content, screw washers are more effective for aggregate preparation.
Q2: Can the screw stone washer handle large river pebbles and cobblestones?
XLZ series can handle coarse materials up to 75mm, including river pebbles, cobblestones, granite chips, crushed stone, and coarse gravel. The large screw diameter (up to 1118mm) and robust blade design allow processing of mixed stone materials. For boulders larger than 75mm, we recommend pre-screening or using our jaw crusher first. The double-screw configuration is specifically designed for high-capacity, continuous operation with larger stone content in quarries.
Q3: What is the difference between stone washing and sand washing equipment?
Stone washing equipment (like XLZ screw stone washer) is designed for coarse aggregate (5-75mm) such as gravel, pebbles, and crushed stone, with heavy-duty construction to handle abrasive materials. Sand washing equipment (like ZDT series) is designed for fine aggregate (0-5mm) with features for fine sand recovery and dewatering. Stone washers focus on removing clay and soil from coarse stones for construction aggregate, while sand washers focus on cleaning fine particles and controlling moisture for concrete sand.
Q4: How easy is it to replace wear parts in remote quarry locations?
The screw blades are the main wear parts, made of high-manganese steel for extended life (typically 8-12 months depending on stone abrasiveness). Replacement is straightforward: remove the top cover, detach the old blade segments, and install new ones. Basic mechanical skills and standard tools are sufficient. We provide detailed maintenance manuals and video guides. For remote quarry operations in Africa, Southeast Asia, or South America, we recommend keeping a spare set of blades on-site, which we can include in the initial shipment or supply within 7-15 days.
